“Floating Rib” is a look at the experience and practice of Black women of The Bahamas working in the diaspora, exploring roots, bodies and belonging, homecomings and goings.
In centering the practices of Black women of The Bahamas, this exhibition offers a moment to focus on the experience of Black Caribbean women negotiating their lives, identities, and creative practices elsewhere – and, often, between spaces. The concept of home offers both comfort and contention for the history of women: Home as the domestic, Home as a place of grounding, and Home as a place of origin and identity are all made even more complex through a Caribbean context. For many, Home is a thing to be carried. Through looking at the practice of women who are working or have worked in the diaspora, the artists in their own ways deal with the sense of being displaced physically and emotionally by the Bahamian and Caribbean spaces that they often don’t feel a sense of agency or ownership within. Floating Rib is a moment to appreciate the Black Feminine, Mobility, Identity, and Black body politics.

«Floating Rib» est un regard sur l’expérience et la pratique des femmes noires des Bahamas travaillant dans la diaspora, explorant les racines, les corps et l’appartenance, les retours et les allées et venues.
En centrant les pratiques des femmes noires des Bahamas, cette exposition offre un moment pour se concentrer sur l’expérience des femmes noires caribéennes qui négocient leur vie, leur identité et leurs pratiques créatives ailleurs – et, souvent, entre les espaces. Le concept de maison offre à la fois confort et discorde pour l’histoire des femmes: la maison comme domestique, la maison comme lieu d’ancrage et la maison comme lieu d’origine et d’identité sont toutes rendues encore plus complexes dans un contexte caribéen. Pour beaucoup, la maison est une chose à porter. En examinant la pratique des femmes qui travaillent ou ont travaillé dans la diaspora, les artistes gèrent à leur manière le sentiment d’être déplacés physiquement et émotionnellement par les espaces des Bahamas et des Caraïbes qu’ils ne ressentent souvent pas le sens de l’action. Ou la propriété à l’intérieur. Floating Rib est un moment pour apprécier la politique féminine noire, la mobilité, l’identité et le corps noir.
