A selection of works realized in the year 2000 of the Puerto Rican abstract artist Edwin Velazquez Collazo will present himself through an Open Studio / Estudio Abierto that will be at the cabo el próximo sabado 17 de diciembre from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Casa Silvana (donde el artist tiene su taller) localizado en el Barrio Mambiche Prieto de Humacao.
The exhibition is made up of 11 works of small, medium and large format, in which the artist expresses himself through acrylic on canvas/canvas as support. Edwin Velázquez Collazo, one of the Puerto Rican abstract art artists of the 1990s generation, was born in San Mateo de Cangrejos (Santurce), 1961. He has developed as a plastic artist, cultural manager, art critic (member of the International Association of Art Critics of the United States (AICA-USA) and curator (he has focused on contemporary Afro-Puerto Rican art).He obtained a Bachelor of Art from the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico.Together with Leída Rodríguez Vila he founded and directed the Coalition of Artistas de Puerto Rico, a specialized social network on the plastic arts that existed on the island from 2009 to 2014. Founder and editor of the blogs Puerto Rico Art News and Black Art in Puerto Rico / Afro-Puerto Rican Art; founder and former president of the Association of Plastic Artists of Puerto Rico. He was also curator of the first collective exhibition of black artists in Puerto Rico under the title Parenthesis: Eight Contemporary Black Artists in 1996. His most recent curatorial projects are: Parenthesis: 25 years later in the Afro Corridor; Other Voices: current Afro-Puerto Rican art and Cimarronas: black and Afro-descendant artists, both at the Casa Escuté Museum; Afro-Identities in the East Room of the Arsenal of the Spanish Navy in La Puntilla, ICP for the 2022 Afro International Summit. He is currently the director of Casa Silvana, a self-managed rural space for the dissemination and promotion of contemporary Afro-Puerto Rican art located in the Mambiche neighborhood Dark in Humacao. As an artist, he has had over 10 individual exhibitions in Puerto Rico and exhibited his work collectively in galleries, museums, and local and international institutions in countries such as Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Russia, France, Germany, Belgium, Romania among others. He has won awards and distinctions from the National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, Fundación Ángel Ramos, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, Fundación de Puerto Rico, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Mellow Foundation.
Una selección de obras realizadas en los años 2000 del artista abstracto puertorriqueño Edwin Velazquez Collazo se presentará a través de un Open Studio / Estudio Abierto que se llevará a cabo el próximo sábado 17 de diciembre de 12:00 a 5:00 pm en Casa Silvana (donde el artista tiene su taller) localizado en el Barrio Mambiche Prieto de Humacao.
La exhibición está integrada por 11 obras de pequeño, mediano y gran formato, en la que el artista se expresa por medio del acrílico sobre tela/canvas como soporte. Edwin Velázquez Collazo,uno de los artistas del arte abstracto puertorriqueño de la generación del 90, nació en San Mateo de Cangrejos (Santurce), 1961. Se ha desarrollado como artista plástico,gestor cultural, crítico de arte (miembro de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte de Estados Unidos (AICA-USA) y curador (se ha enfocado en el arte afropuertorriqueño contemporáneo). Obtuvo un Bachillerato en Arte de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico. Junto a Leída Rodríguez Vila fundó y dirigió la Coalición de Artistas de Puerto Rico una red social especializada sobre las artes plásticas que hubo en la isla del 2009 al 2014. Fundador y editor de los blogs Puerto Rico Art News y Black Art in Puerto Rico / Arte Afropuertorriqueño; fundador y ex presidente de la Asociación de Artistas Plásticos de Puerto Rico. Tambien fue curador de la primera exposición colectiva de artistas negros en Puerto Rico bajo el titulo de Paréntesis: ocho artistas negros contemporáneos en 1996. Sus más recientes proyectos curatoriales son: Paréntesis: 25 años después en el Corredor Afro; Otras Voces: arte afropuertorriqueño actual y Cimarronas: artistas negras y afrodescendientes ambas en el Museo Casa Escuté; Afro-Identidades en la Sala Este del Arsenal de la Marina Española en la Puntilla, ICP para la Cumbre Afro Internacional 2022. Actualmente es director de Casa Silvana un espacio rural de autogestión para la difusión y promoción del arte afropuertorriqueño contemporáneo localizado en el Barrio Mambiche Prieto en Humacao. Como artista ha realizado sobre 10 exposiciones individuales en Puerto Rico y exhibido su obra colectivamente en galerías, museos e instituciones locales e internacionales de países como Brasil, República Dominicana, Estados Unidos, Italia, España, Portugal, Canadá, Rusia, Francia, Alemania, Bélgica, Rumania entre otros. Ha ganado premios y distinciones del National Endowment for the Arts, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, Fundación Ángel Ramos, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, Fundación de Puerto Rico, la Fundación Rockefeller y la Fundación Mellow.
