As part of this exhibition, artworks by Cuban artists Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) and Belkis Ayón (1967-1999) will be included. Both artists, in their own decolonising ways incorporated their Afro-Cuban heritage and culture in their art to create a new visual language, while white European artists looked to ‘Africa’ for the ‘exotic and unknown’.
Cette exposition comprendra des œuvres des artistes cubains Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) et Belkis Ayón (1967-1999). Ces deux artistes, à leur manière décolonisatrice, ont incorporé leur héritage et leur culture afro-cubaine dans leur art pour créer un nouveau langage visuel, alors que les artistes européens blancs se tournaient vers l’Afrique pour y trouver “l’exotique et l’inconnu”.
