The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) is proud to announce the opening of a new permanent exhibition, “The Nation/The Imaginary: The National Collection.” This exhibition is a significant part of NAGB’s year-long 20th-anniversary celebrations, encompassing various educational and public programmes. The exhibition, curated by Richardo Barrett and Letitia Pratt, explores artistic representations of individual and collective identities. The public viewing of this momentous exhibition will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, and admission is free.
For the first time in its history, the NAGB will display all 500+ works of art from the National Collection, which it has acquired over its 20-year journey. Through exhibitions and educational programmes, the NAGB remains committed to promoting Bahamian artists and the stories they tell.
“The Nation/The Imaginary” delves into juxtapositions of myth/reality, paradise/plantation, and the significance of imagination in transcending colonial ideation. As artists bear witness to our political coming-of-age, they craft stories that challenge power and guide us to a more nuanced self-knowledge. The collection is only a snapshot of this story/making–a great place to start imagining.
Art is a universal language that is accessible to everyone, providing inspiration and knowledge. While we are proud to safeguard and curate the National Collection, every print, painting, photograph, and sculpture belongs to all Bahamians. This diverse collection reflects us as a people and facilitates conversations that deepen our cultural understanding. La National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) est fière d’annoncer l’ouverture d’une nouvelle exposition permanente, « The Nation/The Imaginary : The National Collection ». Cette exposition constitue une partie importante des célébrations du 20e anniversaire du NAGB, qui se déroulent tout au long de l’année, englobant divers programmes éducatifs et publics. L’exposition, organisée par Richardo Barrett et Letitia Pratt, explore les représentations artistiques des identités individuelles et collectives. La visite publique de cette exposition marquante aura lieu le jeudi 19 octobre 2023, de 18h30 à 21h00, et l’entrée est gratuite.
